Keir Residence - Avoca Beach

The Keir Residence at Avoca Beach, by True North Architects, won a commendation for Residential Architecture at the 2013 Australian Institute of Architects, Newcastle regional Awards.  The jury citation stated:  "This beautifully crafted new house shows a novel approach to a steep site which has produced a home that presents a wonderful integration of garden and indoor/outdoor spaces.  The series of interconnected decks, terraces, & gardens provide a large area of varied & usable outdoor spaces on such a steeply sloping site that the outdoor areas enjoy access to the beautiful views across the lagoons of Avoca to the beach & headland beyond.  Passive solar techniques have been utilised and the northern orientation ensure ideal conditions all year round without the need for air-conditioning.  The house settles well into its site, respecting its context and gracefully addressing the streetscape. It shows a careful restraint and unassuming beauty."

Recently published in The Daily Telegraph's property lift-out & by Breeze Magazine, it was also selected in House & Garden's Top 50 Rooms edition, published in the November 2013 Issue.

"What True North Architects achieved has a lovely sense of always being connected with the garden and the sky, regardless of where you are in the house, and always being connected with the ocean regardless of where you are in the garden. All in all, I love being surrounded by garden and sky" - Philippa Keir.
